Ted Kennedy Passes; Hopefully, Obamacare Will Not

Newsweek, and the rest of the mainstream media, have lost their last lingering vestiges of credibility. After weeks of claiming that the recession is over, that we’re out of the woods and that Obama’s stimulus has “worked”, the latest jobless numbers show a worsening economy.

California, the nation’s most populous state and (formerly) the world’s tenth-largest economy all by itself, has a jobless rate of 11 percent. My stomping grounds, the Central Valley, have been particularly hard hit, with the water shortage-largely the work of our ineffectual state government and smothering regulations-killing of our agricultural jobs.  Las Vegas, Nevada has a jobless rate of over 13 percent. The dailynews.com reports that NYC has a jobless rate of 9.6 percent; not only is it the first time since November 2007 that the Big Apple’s unemployment rate has been higher than the national average , but it’s also the city’s highest unemployment rate in the last 12 years. As for the nation as a whole, unemployment stands at 9. percent, which leads me to ask, “Gee, Mr. President, didn’t you say a few months ago that, unless we act immediately, unless we pass the stimulus right now, that unemployment could reach 8 percent?” Well, here we are, stimulus passed, and unemployment is well over 8 percent.

But  Mr. Obama won’t be answering any questions for a while, as he’s currently on holiday in Martha’s Vineyard. All the hew and cry the media made over Bush’s numerous (and lengthy) vacations is nowhere to be seen. Then again, this is the same media that gave Obama passes on everything from hiring tax cheats to his cabinet, sitting in the pews of a racist preacher’s church for two decades, and flipping and flopping on issues like a dying fish on a pier. Speaking of Martha’s Vineyard, I recently heard a story in news about that same liberal enclave and favored haunt of the elites suffering from-gasp!-racial tension! The Vineyard, like most of modern America, relies on cheap immigrant labor, from individuals of often dubious legal status. Most of the immigrant workers in the Vineyard are from Brazil, and, apparently, they’ve become a source of contention among residents in the vineyard.

A stone’s throw from the Martha’s Vineyard, in New York state, Governor Paterson is pulling the race card, saying that calls for him to leave office are based on his race, not his poor performance.  He also stated that, in case there was any doubt remaining, that “We’re not in a post-racial period.”

And, of course, I must acknowledge the recent passing of Senator Ted Kennedy, the last of the three (scratch that, four) Kennedy brothers. While I am compelled to express my condolences, and while death by brain cancer is a fate I wouldn’t wish on anyone, I must be honest and say that my eyes are not so clouded with tears that I am blind to the late Senator’s dismal record is disservice to this country. Foremost in my mind is the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act that the now-deceased Senator championed so fiercely. Back then, Ted Kennedy insisted that the Act would not drastically change the rate of immigration, or alter American racial demographics. He promised the nation that American cities would not be swamped with millions of immigrants, that the immigrants allowed in would not take jobs away from American citizens, and that it would not result in an overwhelming majority of immigrants coming from one nation or region (cough-cough, Mexico, cough-cough, Central and South America. Excuse me, I must have had something in my throat).   We can see now that all those predictions were lies made to facilitate the bill’s passing, and that the resulting demographic shift has greatly favored the Democratic Party. Senator Kennedy was also a major champion of socialized medicine, and his death is already being used as an instrument to further the Democratic push for Obamacare. The reforms currently proposed include none of the measures that would truly benefit Americans-tort reform, portable policies, tax credits for the purchasing of private insurance-but would merely increase the government’s control over the lives of individuals, and would, like the 1965 immigration reforms, hurt our nation in the long run. While we pray for the repose of old Ted’s soul, let us also pray that this push for “health care reform” will soon follow one of its greatest champion into the grave.

One Response to “Ted Kennedy Passes; Hopefully, Obamacare Will Not”

  1. Siegfried says:

Immigration-wise, Kennedy also had a major hand in the 1986 amnesty and the ludicrous Diversity Visa Lottery program. Hopefully his absence will weaken the next push for amnesty that Obama promised for this year. (Though the drawn-out healthcare battle may well postpone it — can’t risk agitating the natives too much, you know!)
