Live Updates

Final | Ohio State 68, UCSB 51. Gauchos beat the spread by one, but their season is over. The full recap will come later, I’ve got to get to the locker room / press conference. G’night all!

0:54 | Sad Gaucho faces being shown on the jumbo-board as time winds down. For good measure, Lauderdale packs Chris Brew.

1:21 | OJ has 20 points, making him the second-highest scoring #33 on the court. Diebler has 23. And now he checks out for good. The reserves are getting their minutes now, which is good NCAA experience.

3:30 | Last media timeout, same score. The only question now is will SB beat the spread. Last I checked it was 17.5, which means they’re .5 off pace right now.

3:40 | No comeback if the Gauchos can’t make their shots. And they can’t. Stick a fork in’em, they’re done. 64-46.

5:00 | Exchanging buckets, SB not really coming back…

7:21 | Diebler again… that’s 7 threes.

7:47 | Timeout on the floor and OSU will inbound on return. Aside from Orlando and Powell, UCSB looks gassed. A couple of airballs in a row over the last few minutes, and that’s never good.

8:06 | Great sequence as Powell drains the pull-up three. 54-42 OSU.

9:00 | Nunnally with an airball… Diebler drains another three at the other end. SB can’t maintain momentum.

10:30 | Bad possession for UCSB and Ohio State capitalizes on the other end.

11:21 | Coming out of a timeout, Hudson hits the free throw line for two. Makes’em both. 49-37 OSU.

12:04 | OJ drains two more free throws, but OSU is unstoppable right now offensively. AND NOW POWELL WITH THE THREE. 10 point deficit again.

13:30 | SB playing sloppy, but OJ hits a big three to keep them around. Then so does Buford. OSU has an answer for everything.

15:00 | OSU hits a dagger. The lead is 15.

16:00 | OJ drains a three to make it a 10 point game again. And then Lauderdale gets a second straight big dunk. 39-27 OSU.

17:00 | SOMOGYI WITH THE DUNK! …and then Diebler drains a dagger of a three. 35-24 OSU.

17:15 | So does Serna. Somogyi (already a fan-favorite in Milwaukee) checks in.

17:37 | Lauderdale picks up his third personal!

18:00 | Nunnally converts while open underneath! 30-22 now.

18:39 | Brew gets fouled and splits his free throws. The lead is 10 for now.

18:53 | Serna’s hook is no good but the Gauchos call a time out on the loose-ball rebound. 30-19 OSU, SB ball.

19:11 | Serna drains a bucket and OSU airballs. Good start SB.

20:00 Remaining in the Second Half | UCSB starts with possession to  begin the second half.

Halftime | Something occurs to me as the Ohio State band plays Don’t Stop Believin’ (which seems more appropriate for UCSB, but no matter). Our band has no tubas. How strange.

Halftime | It’s been a game of streaks. Ohio State has had runs of 13-3 and 13-0, while UCSB has a 9-0 run of its own. Between all those spurts? It’s 8-4 UCSB. For what little that’s worth.

Halftime | Diebler has 14 points for OSU, mostly on 3-balls. The Ohio State band is playing All the Small Things, but for UCSB their problems are pretty large. Namely, the Gauchos aren’t shooting well. At all. Namely 7-29 for a 24.1% clip. 1-10 from 3. OSU is 10-24 and 4-9 (all makes by Diebler), for a much better mark. That’s why the buckeyes are winning, no doubt. It’s not like SB hasn’t had open looks, they just cannot drain them. Lauderdale has five blocks. FIVE. Wow…

Halftime | And we’ve reached the half, with the Gauchos down 13. Not a great result, but it could be worse. Somogyi and OJ are SB’s players of the half, while Lauderdale has to have had the biggest impact on the game for Ohio State.

0:28 | Will Brew tries to draw a charge and gets called for his THIRD personal. That could make a big difference. Turner drains two free throws. 30-17 OSU.

0:58 | Somog draws Lauderdale’s second personal. That could make a difference.

1:11 | Hello top plays! Nunnally throws down an ally-oop off a broken press! HUGE. Then he picks up a steal and gets fouled. There’s the impact we expected. 28-17.

1:47 | Somog checks back in for Serna. Serna does not matchup well with OSU.

2:25 | UCSB would be in this thing if it could just hit its open looks. 27-15 OSU.

3:03 | Orlando ends the drought! Now where do things go?

3:22 | It’s a 13-0 run as there’s another timeout. Gauchos desperately need to end the half well. Lauderdale is killing them defensively with block after block, and Diebler is draining his threes.

3:32 | The run won’t end. 27-13 OSU, SB needs an answer, but none of the shots will fall. Cowboy Bob calls timeout.

4:40 | Turner and Orlando getting into it a little bit, and the crowd does not approve

5:35 | OSU makes a run of its own, ending in an open three. Cowboy Bob calls timeout to stop the bleeding. Ohio State’s size underneath is really hurting the Gauchos. Nunnally as a 3 is a total non-factor. 21-13 OSU.

6:30 | Sam “the Muffin Man” Phippen has checked in, but the Gauchos turn it over.

7:00 | Coming back from the timeout the teams exchange quick possessions. The pace has really picked up!

7:33 | SB turns it over after an OSU make. Buckeyes looking to regain some composure after the timeout. Somogyi looks solid, Orlando is hustling his butt off and the crowd is very pro-SB. But, the ball-handling looks weak and Nunnally has been a non-factor. The 9-0 run all came without him. Mixed bag so far. 16-13 OSU.

8:11 | Somog nearly converts on the ally-oop, but heads to the free throw line instead. Misses the first but makes the second. 14-13 OSU. If he has a good offensive day it could mean big things. Big, big things.

8:20 | 9-0 run ends as OSU goes to the line and makes one. 14-12 OSU.

8:45 | ORLANDO WITH A PUTBACK! 13-12 OSU, and the crowd is enormously loud!

10:00 | A quarter through, only down 5. Not too bad for SB, and the Gauchos have possession. And Pastorek nails one! 13-10, Gaucho fans getting into it!

11:13 | Orlando converts after a couple of UCSB second chances. 13-8 now, SB coming back?

11:56 | Say what you will, Brutus the Buckeye is a better mascot than most. Way better than the GT Yellow Jacket at least. Somogyi’s free throw is silky smooth, where’d that come from? 13-6 OSU.

11:56 | Somogyi makes an immediate impact! A rebound and a bucket on a good dish from Orlando. He goes to the line for the and-1, but we’ll see if the big man converts. 13-5 OSU.

12:29 | Subs finally check in. Powell is now officially the Gaucho who has played in the most games in UCSB history.

12:29 | First media timeout, OSU up 13-3 with possession. Well, it can only get better for the Gauchos. Weiner’s falling three remains their only points over 7 minutes in.

13:00 | No stoppages of play to get subs in. SB couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. 13-3 OSU.

14:11 | Nothing is falling for the Gauchos. Very bad start

15:08 | Gauchos shooting cold too. 11-3 OSU. Powell and Somogyi checking in.

17:03 | Brew has two fouls, so Joyner comes in. Gauchos look outmanned physically so far. 9-3 OSU.

17:53 | Early jitters, but Weiner gets SB on the board with a 3-ball. Tightly called by the officials so far. 4-3 OSU.

19:45 | Ohio State wins the tip, gets a shooting foul and scores first. 2-0 OSU.

20:00 Remaining in the First Half (9:04 CDT) | Tipoff! The teams have been announced, the fans are in their seats, and the Gauchos are ready to go!

Pre-game | Today’s officials are Ted Valentine, Glenn Mayborg and Rick Ridenhour. Teams are on the court ready for introductions.

Pre-game | Starting lineups:

UCSB: Serna, Weiner, Brew, Nunnally, Johnson

Ohio State: Turner, Lighty, Diebler, Buford, Lauderdale

No surprises on either roster.

8:42 p.m. CDT | Gametime! GT will play the winner after a close game. Starting lineups are here… get that to you in a second. From now on, updates will display the game clock and not the real  time. Just so you know.

Georgia Tech Throwing Down... Hard

Jarrick Goldhamer / Daily Nexus

6:20 p.m. CDT | Halftime of GT-OK St. Check out this sick allyoop tech threw down earlier:

4:42 p.m. CDT | Pitt defeats Oakland in a blowout. Now we’ve got a break before session two action, with OK St v. Georgia Tech up next.

1:35 p.m. (Central Time) | Xavier just defeated Minnesota in the first game. The atmosphere here in Milwaukee is absolutely crazy. Gauchos are the last game of the night, so two more to go.

    Dave,

The cool-down period the NCAA mandates made that tough, but there will be plenty of quotes (including some from Somogyi and Brew that other media won’t have) in tomorrow’s recap.

    Thanks for reading,
